Dublin clocks up 2 million bike hirings and cycling is safer than ever

The Dublin hire bike scheme has now clocked up 2 million rentals and it is becoming more popular than ever. The first million rentals took 11 months to achieve and the second million has taken only a further 9 months.

The scheme has proved very safe. Since it started, there have been just two injuries to cyclists using the bikes that have required hospital attention, and both of those people were out of hospital within 24 hours.

The increasing popularity of cycling in Dublin is making cycling in the city safer than ever before. In 1997, 24 cyclists died in Dublin; in 2009 only three. There are many more cyclists now than a decade ago.
